How GoFundMe Makes Money

GoFundMe is a crowdfunding platform that allows people to raise money for all kinds of causes.

With over $45.1 million and counting, America's Food Fund, which was launched by Leonardo DiCaprio and Laurene Powell Jobs, is its most successful campaign.

Unfortunately, fraud isn’t a rarity either. Scammers have raised millions on GoFundMe by mostly making up stories.

Brad Damphousse and Andrew Ballester launched the firm as CreateAFund in 2008. They both stepped down in 2015 after selling a majority stake.

GoFundMe, with over $15 billion in lifetime donations from 50 million donors, remains one of the biggest crowdfunding platforms worldwide.

But how does GoFundMe actually make money?

GoFundMe charges platform and transaction fees, which are paid by the people that raise money on its platform.

Users can not only donate to campaigns but directly to GoFundMe as well. The firm does not disclose how many donations it directly receives, though.
